Sworn Translation vs. Notarized Translation: The Difference

Sworn and notarized translations are often confused. What is the difference and when do you need each?

A sworn translation is made by a sworn translator authorized after taking an oath before a notary, who certifies its accuracy with their own stamp and signature, declaring the translation faithful to the original.

A notarized translation is a sworn translation that is additionally certified by a notary, who officially confirms the translator’s authority and the authenticity of their signature.

Official institutions, courts, consulates and universities usually require notarized translation. For some procedures a sworn translation alone may suffice, so it is advisable to confirm the required level with the receiving institution.
